Daily Devotion: Alcohol

Bible Reading: Proverbs 23:29-35

Key Verse: Verse 29 – “Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?”

Key Words: Who hath woe

According to a government survey 16% of all teens binge, another 55% socially drink.

Now, if my math is correct 71% of all teens drink alcoholic beverages. Some less, some more – but 71% drink.

The question is: why; why do they drink? According to the same government survey, teens drink for several reasons.

• First, there is the risk factor – the thrill of doing something they know they shouldn’t do – the thrill of “getting high” on alcohol.
• Secondly, peer pressure acceptance.
• Thirdly, environment – who the teen runs with plays a big role in whether or not they drink.

How can a parent tell if their child is involved with alcohol?

• The nose test: smell their breath.
• Dropping grades: [could be an indication that the child is involved with alcohol, drugs, or other sins].
• Change of friends.

What can you, as a parent, do?

• Pray for your child daily. Begin before their birth, and continue praying until God calls you home.
• Set a Godly example.
• Integrity: practice what you preach.
• Find a good church home and be faithful.
• Make sure your child understands that there are rights and wrongs in life, and to stand for right.

Admiral Heihachio Togo, whose brilliant tactics had destroyed the Russian fleet at the battle of the Sea of Japan in 1905, visited the United States shortly after the Russo-Japanese War. At a state dinner in Admiral Togo’s honor, William Jennings Bryan was asked to propose a toast. Because Bryan was well known as a strict teetotaler, it was feared that an embarrassing breakdown of protocol was about to occur. But as Bryan stood to propose his toast, he held up his glass and said, “Admiral Togo has won great victory on water, and I will therefore toast him in water. When Admiral Togo wins a victory on champagne, I will toast him in champagne.”

Thought:
Remarkably, a 2002 Zogby poll showed that 75% of American college professors teach that there is no such thing as right and wrong. Rather, they treat the questions of good and evil as relative to “individual values and cultural diversity.”
