Daily Devotion: Quietness or Quantity?

Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes 4:1-6

Key Verse: Verse 6 – “Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit."

Key Words: Better is an handful with quietness

Much isn’t always best. You can read the same principle in Proverbs 17:1, “Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.”

Some years ago we (my wife and I) decided to get an aquarium. So as we went about getting the fish for the aquarium, we came across a beautiful fish, flowing fins, a greenish-blue fish. It was beautiful. So we put the aquarium up, got it all ready, and one by one we put the fish in. Even though we didn’t get the beautiful greenish-blue fish, we couldn’t forget about it and its beauty. So a week after purchasing the other fish, we went and purchased the

The next morning we noticed that one of our goldfish had died, and the next morning another, and then another. So we asked an expert in aquariums and fish to come check our’s out. Evidently we were doing something wrong. Well, when he arrived and saw our beautiful fish, he immediately said, “There is your problem! This fish is a Beta. It’s a fighter. It attacks other fish. There will never be peace in the aquarium until you get rid of the Beta.”

He was right. After we took the Beta out of the aquarium, instantly the other fish were at ease.

Oftentimes in life we think more is better which may not be the case. We are far better off with just a handful with quietness than much with strife and division.

What to do:
✞ It’s not the quantity of things that are important; it’s the quality.
