Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes 7:7-10
Key Verse: Verse 9 - “Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.'
Key Words: Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry
It’s easy to see that the theme of verses 7 through 10 is the spirit.
Note verse 8: patient in spirit, proud in spirit; verse 9: hasty in spirit.
Sometimes we struggle with how to define the word spirit. It deals with our intellect, our mental state, how we think. It has a lot to do with our attitude. Our attitude should be one of patience, not one of pride or hastiness. We should be extremely cautious in regard to a hasty spirit of anger or becoming angry quickly. We call this being quick-tempered.
Although Alexander the Great conquered the known world, he couldn’t conquer his own temper. On one occasion, Cletus, a childhood friend and a general in Alexander’s army, became drunk and insulted the leader in front of his men. Alexander became enraged and hurled a spear at Cletus, intending merely to scare him. Instead, the spear killed Alexander’s life-long friend. Remorse engulfed Alexander as he assessed the destruction of his uncontrollable anger. If we don’t control our anger, it will control us!
What to do:
✞It’s always wise to remember that anger is only one letter short of danger.
