Daily Devotion: Jezebel – The Cursed One

Bible Reading:  I Kings 21:5-25

Key Verse: Verse 25But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.

Key Words:
Jezebel his wife stirred up.

The name Jezebel was certainly not appropriate for this woman.  The name Jezebel means chaste, free from carnality.

There are several things we know about Jezebel.  First, she was opposed to the man of God.  She desired to see Elijah put to death (I Kings 19:2).  Secondly, we know that she worshipped the god of Baal.  Jezebel’s father’s name was Ethbaal which means a man of Baal.  Jezebel had been raised to worship this false god.  Third of all, we know she was a domineering wife (I Kings 21:7).  We also know she loved adornment (II Kings 9:30).  Fifth of all, we know she died a horrible death (II Kings 9:33).  Lastly, we know that she was a cursed woman (II King 9:34).

Jezebel failed to realize that there is one more powerful than her, and that there’s a payday someday.

The story is told of a farmer in a Midwestern town who had a strong disdain for “religious” things.  As he plowed his field on Sunday morning, he would shake his fist at the church people who passed by on their way to worship.  October came and the farmer had his finest crop ever – the best in the entire county.  When the harvest was complete, he placed an advertisement in the local paper which belittled the Christians for their faith in God.  Near the end of his diatribe he wrote, “Faith in God must not mean much if someone like me can prosper.”  The response from the Christians in the community was quiet and polite.  In the next edition of the town paper, a small ad appeared.  It read simply, “God doesn’t always settle His accounts in October.”  Amen and Amen!!

What to do:
✞ Don’t live like Jezebel, or you’ll surely die like her as well.
