Daily Devotion: Euodias & Syntyche

Bible Reading:  Philippians 4

Key Verse: Verse 15 I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.

Key Words: be of the same mind in the Lord

Not much is known about these two ladies other than the name Euodias means prosperous journey and Syntyche means fortunate.  We also know that the two of them did not get along.  We are not told what they disagreed on, but whatever it was had gotten so out of hand that Paul had to mildly rebuke them.

It’s interesting that Paul tells the two ladies to be of the same mind in the Lord.  The word mind means intellect or what one thinks.  The only way any of us can get along is to think what God thinks.  Our thoughts should be based on the Scriptures.  Ultimately, we should all want what the Lord wants.  It is important that in the church we dwell together in unity.

In a Peanuts cartoon Lucy demanded that Linus change television channels, threatening him with her fist if he didn’t.  “What makes you think you can walk right in here and take over?” asked Linus.  “These five fingers,” said Lucy.  “Individually they’re nothing but when I curl them together into a fist, they form a weapon that is terrible to behold.”

Now while we would never agree with Lucy’s tactics, she does make a good point: that being, individually we are not very strong, but when we unite together as a body of believers in God’s power, “we make a weapon to behold.”

What to do:
✞ Don’t be difficult just for the sake of being difficult, the church’s strength is found in unity.
