Daily Devotion: None Good But One

Bible Reading:  Mark 10:13-22

Key Verse: Verse 18 - “And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.”

Key Words: there is none good but one, that is, God

In our text, a rich ruler comes to Jesus and does three things:

1.       runs to Jesus,

2.      kneels before Him, and

3.      addresses Him as Good Master.

Jesus responds by asking a question, “Why callest thou me good?  there is none good but one, that is, God.”  The word good in our text is a reference to “having the power to give eternal life.”  So Jesus was asking the rich man if he was acknowledging that Jesus was the Way to eternal life – which He is!

In 1715 King Louis XIV of France died after a reign of seventy-two years.  He had called himself, “The Good King,” and was the monarch who first said, “I am the State!”  His court was the most magnificent in all of Europe, and his funeral was equally spectacular.

As his body lay in state in a golden coffin, orders were given that the church should be dimly lit with only a special candle set above the coffin to dramatize his “goodness.”  At the memorial, thousands waited in silence.  Then Bishop

Massilon began to speak slowly, reaching down, he snuffed out the candle and said, “Only God is good!!”

What to do:
✞ Acknowledge that only God can give eternal life and choose to do so through His Son, Jesus Christ.    ✞ Acknowledge the goodness of God in daily life. (None of us deserve the blessings we have.)
✞ Teach your children to appreciate the blessings of God.  Show them how they are blessed by studying children in other countries, studying past history of our country, and showing them that God loves them.
