Daily Devotion: What God Hates: A Heart That Devises Wicked Imaginations

Bible Reading: Proverbs 6:18; Genesis 6:1-8

Key Verse: Verse 5 – “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Key Words: that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually

In regard to Genesis 6:5 and man’s wicked imagination, John Phillips writes:

The narrative next describes the growing anarchy of the antediluvians; the viewpoint shifting from the earth to heaven. Mention is made of God’s discernment, as is seen in our key verse for this day. The word for imagination is from a Hebrew root relating to pottery; it means “to fashion as a potter.” Men fashioned wicked philosophies, they formed obscene artifacts, they eagerly espoused filthy causes, they made fashionable vile sins; they poured society into their mold.

The likeness of Noah’s day is very evident in our age. We have our new Prometheans – our atom-smashers, our healthy-bringers, our food developers, our code breakers, our mind readers, our pathfinders. We have our modern Epimetheans determined to exploit all new discoveries for the advancement of evil. We have our corrupters, dedicated to the spread of pornography, homosexuality, and licentiousness, deliberately trying to reshape society so that abnormality and vice is the accepted norm.

Genesis 6 does sound more like today, doesn’t it, where every imagination and thought of the heart is only evil continually.
