Daily Devotion: What God Hates: “Any Image”

Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 16:13-22

Key Verse: Verse 22 – Neither shalt thou set thee up any image; which the LORD thy God hateth.”

Key Words: any image

In order to get a full understanding of verse 22, you have to read verse 21, the words “thou shalt not plant thee a grove of trees.” Groves of trees were either built for false gods or primarily used as a place of worshipping false gods. (Read I Kings 14:15.) God didn’t want people confusing the worship of false gods with the worship of the true and living God. He hates it when people tie true worship with false worship.

True biblical worship so satisfies our total personality that we don't have to shop around for man-made substitutes. William Temple made this clear in his masterful definition of worship:

For worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of imagination by His beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose -- and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.”

May our lives be so far from false worship that we will not confuse others into believing it is false worship.

What to do:
✞ Let our light so shine that others may see what true worship really is.
