Bible Reading: Joshua 1:1-8
Key Verse: Verse 8 - “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
Key Words: then thou shalt have good success
Now be honest; can you keep a secret? When privileged information comes your way, does it remain in the walls of your mind? The longer I live, the more I realize the scarcity of people who can be trusted with confidential information. The longer I live, the more I value those who (forgive my bluntness) can keep their mouths closed. The Navy during World War II had a saying that went like this, “Loose lips sink ships.”
A portion of the Hippocratic Oath states, “And whatsoever I shall see or hear in the course of my profession…If it be what should not be published abroad, I will never divulge, holding such things to be holy secrets.”
You and I wouldn’t give a plug nickel for a doctor, minister, attorney, counselor, judge, teacher, secretary, or friend who has no control over their tongue. When a person tells things they should not, it reveals a weakness in their character.
Solomon wrote the following. Proverbs 10:14, “Wise men lay up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.” Proverbs 10:19a, “In the multitude of words, there wanteth not sin.” Proverbs 11:13a, “A talebearer revealeth secrets.” Proverbs 25:28, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down and without walls.”
So let’s close by establishing four points.
Whatever you are told in confidence, do not repeat.
Whenever you are tempted to talk, do not yield.
Whenever you are discussing people, do not gossip.
Whenever you disagree, do not slander.
Now honestly, can you keep a secret? Prove it!
