Daily Devotion: THE HONOR OF REAL SPIRITUALITY

Bible Reading: John 4:1-24

Key Verse: Verse 24 – “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Key Words: spirit and in truth

Being spiritual is not based upon what you do, but what you are.

The word spirit means the wind. Now for the longest time, I struggled with what the word spirit meant. But when you understand the word wind, the meaning of spirit becomes clear. Following are several things about the wind.

  1. The wind can’t be seen. You see the results of the wind as it rushes through the leaves and branches of the tree, but you can’t see the wind.

  2. The wind can be refreshing. A nice, cool breeze on a hot summer day is refreshing.

  3. The wind can break. We have often seen downed trees and power lines after a strong wind.

  4. But the wind could do none of the above without moving. So it is with the Spirit. The spirit of man is what moves him. So a spiritual man is moved toward the Spirit; a carnal or non-spiritual man is moved toward carnality, and the lost spirit moves toward the natural (I Corinthians 2:14).

So the point is that we often fail to understand true spirituality. We believe that singing in the choir or singing specials or working in a ministry or reading our Bible daily makes us spiritual when in reality just the opposite is true.

I shouldn’t sing in the church choir or sing special music or work in a ministry or read my Bible to be spiritual, I should do those things because I am spiritual.

So let me ask: why do you do what you do? Do you do it to become spiritual or because you are spiritual?

There is true honor in being spiritual; but there is no honor when we aren’t.

What to do:

✞ Make sure you do what you do because you are spiritual, not to be spiritual.
