Daily Devotion: Racism

Bible Reading: Proverbs 4:20-27

Key Verse: Verse 23 – “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Key Words: Keep thy heart

The American Heritage dictionary defines racism as the belief that a particular race is superior to other races.

It is totally false to believe that all whites believe that they are superior to all other races, just as it is false to believe that all blacks, Hispanics or Asians believe they are superior.

Racism has existed for years. For example, we read in Nehemiah 4:2, “What do these feeble Jews?” The Jews felt superior to the Samaritans, John 4:9.

So what is the answer? Well, removing monuments or destroying monuments certainly doesn’t help. Changing the name of Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup, Uncle Ben’s rice or Aunt Jemima’s pancake mix is not the answer either. The only thing that will defeat racism in your heart is by replacing it with Jesus Christ. “Keep thy heart with all diligence: for out of it are the issues of life.”

I served in Viet Nam and the soldier that had my back was Randall Shields from Louisiana. He was black. The person who had his back was Mike Rouse, and yes, I am white. The thing that caused us to “bond” was our love for Jesus Christ. So you can curse at other races; you can tear down monuments, take down pictures and change the names of buildings, but that will never stop racists from hating. In fact, it will inflame them. The only answer is Jesus Christ!
