Sheltered is a word we hear often concerning Christian education. Are students sheltered in a Christian school environment? That depends upon one’s definition of sheltered. If by sheltered one means out of touch with reality, inferior curriculum, and a lack of extra-curricular activities, the answer is an absolute NO. The student in a Christian school is not sheltered; but on the other hand, if by sheltered one means a lack of tolerance and protection from abuse of peers, abusive language, drugs, and in general, the environment of sin, the answer, so far as I am concerned, is a resounding YES. We do attempt to shelter.
You do not put young plants into a hothouse to make them weak; you put them there because they are weak. Our children are like young tender plants and do need protection from exposure to the philosophy of “worldly education and educators.” To train our children in a Christian home and raise them to love God, the Word of God, and the things of God, and then intentionally place them in an educational system that teaches them just the opposite of what you have taught in the home. To me that is nonsensical. Would one take a young tender houseplant, nurture it to good health, then place it outside for the winter? I think not. In that sense, our plants receive better care than our children.
The Christian school educational environment is not perfect. It is by no means heaven on earth. But even with some of its shortcomings, it is certainly nearer to what God would have us provide for our children than what is available in secular education where God and His Word are not welcome!
