Daily Devotion: When I Plead

Bible Reading: Jeremiah 12:1-6

Key Verse: Verse 1 – “Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?"

Key Words: when I plead with thee

To me personally, Jeremiah 12:1 is one of the most remarkable verses in all the Bible. The people of Israel wanted Jeremiah dead. God said to Jeremiah, I’m sending you to a people who want to cut you down like a tree; they want to slaughter you like an ox. They want to remove your name from the earth (Jeremiah 11:19). So how does Jeremiah respond? “Righteous art thou, O Lord, when I plead with thee.” Isn’t that amazing?? Man, do we need more Jeremiah’s today.

Archaeologists digging in the remains of a school for imperial pages in Rome found a picture dating from the third century. It shows a boy standing, his hand raised, worshiping a figure on a cross, a figure that looks like a man with the head of an ass. Scrawled in the writing of a young person are the words, “Alexamenos worships his God.” Nearby in a second inscription, “Alexamenos is faithful.” Apparently, a young man who was a Christian was being mocked by his schoolmates for his faithful witness. But he was not ashamed; he was faithful.
