Daily Devotion: What Is Man?

Bible Reading: Psalm 144

Key Verse: Verse 3 - “LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!

Key Words: what is man

David goes on to reply to his own question, “What is man?”

“Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.” David reviews his own life with its accumulated experiences. He thinks back over the great events in which he played a part. He thinks of the ups and downs of life: one moment a national here, the next an object of official suspicion and hate; one moment a king, the next a fugitive; one moment a saint writing psalms, the next a seducer of another man’s wife. He thinks of his days as a shepherd in the country, of his days as a singer at court, his days as a soldier in the camp, his days as a sojourner in the cave. It all seems like a dream. His days have been as a shadow cast on the wall. It is hard to believe that they have all come and gone so swiftly.

So what is man? Not much, someone has said. Man was made from the ground. He’s an earthling, and on his best day he’s just difnified dirt. In fact, every living person is only worth about $3.57.

That’s why you can’t think too highly of yourself. You are just not worth that much. So when you get in your Benz, it’s only $3.57 driving a Benz. It’s $3.57 living in the suburbs. It’s $3.57 wearing designer clothes. It’s $3.57 with more money in the bank than you and I are worth.

Without God, we are pretty worthless.

What to do:
✞ Remember while our worth is not much, to God we are valuable—so valuable He sent His Son to die for us.
