Daily Devotion: The Truth

Bible Reading: John 17:1-17

Key Verse: Verse 17 - “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Key Words: Thy word is truth

Truth is truth - whether we like it or not; and God’s Word is truth. It will always point out our strengths and weaknesses. It separates that which is right from that which is wrong. It separates truth from fiction. I’m reminded of a story told by Harry Ironside that I read sometime back.

“An elderly gentleman, who was very nearsighted, prided himself on his ability as an art critic. While accompanying some friends through a large gallery, he sought to display his real or fancied knowledge of pictures to his friends. He had left his glasses at home and was not able to see things very clearly. Standing before a large frame, he began to point out the inartistic features of the picture before them. ‘The frame,’ he said, ‘is altogether out of keeping with the subject; and as for the subject itself (it was a picture of a man), it is altogether too homely, in fact, too ugly, ever to make a good picture. It is a great mistake for any artist to choose so homely a subject for a picture if he expects it to be a masterpiece.’ The old gentleman was going on like this when his wife managed to get near enough to interrupt. She exclaimed, ‘My dear, you are looking into a mirror.’ Needless to say, he was quite taken back to realize that he had been criticizing his own face.”

Sometimes the truth hurts. But like the old gentleman learned: truth can hurt; and God’s Word is truth, whether we like it or not.

What to do:
✞ Read God’s Word personally. Application is extremely important.
✞ Understand that only through truth can we see ourselves as we really are.
✞ Understand that the Bible is not just a good book, it is the very Word of God. We should live by it continually.
