Daily Devotion: The Bible and The Other Guy

Bible Reading: James 1:22-27

Key Verse: Verse 22 – “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Key Words: be ye doers

Sometimes the hardest thing to do with the Scripture is apply it to your life. For many of us, it is easier to make the application for others, rather than for ourselves. A pastor I know became acutely aware of this when a church member consistently met him after each service and said, “You sure preached to them today.” The pastor dreamed of someday hearing this woman take the message personally. He thought he had finally gotten his chance when one Sunday a severe storm prevented all but the pastor and this woman (who lived directly across from the church) from showing up. After the message, he knew she could not quote her standard remarks. She didn’t. She said, “Too bad they weren’t all here today because you sure preached to them today.”

The first priority of Bible study is personal application!!

One of the reasons we fail to apply the Scripture is because we fail to understand the power of God’s Word on us and our world.

Mahatma Gandi once said, “You Christians have in your keeping a document with enough power in it to blow the whole of civilization to bits, to turn a society upside down, to bring peace to this war-torn world. But you read it as if it were just good literature, and nothing else.”

The Bible is more than just a good book. It is the very Word of God, not just to be read but to be applied! My prayer is that you will apply it, not so much to others as to yourself.

What to do:
✞ Apply God’s Word personally.
✞ Have a planned time when you study God’s Word, and write down ways you can personally apply the Scripture, and then apply it!
✞ As you hear a message, write down what the Spirit of God lays on your heart, go out and apply those things.
✞ Make a commitment to be a doer, not just a hearer of God’s Word.
