Daily Devotion: The Bitter Heart
Bible Reading: Proverbs 14:8-16
Key Verse: Verses 10 –“The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy.”
Key Words: The heart knoweth his own bitterness
We can hide a lot of things from ourselves but bitterness is not one of them. The heart knows when and why it is bitter. Bitterness kills! It kills our willingness to see right. It kills our willingness to hear right. It kills our willingness to act right. Bitterness is a killer.
I recently read a story : A man in Spokane had arranged for the minister from Fourth Memorial church to have his wedding. The day came and the minister didn’t. The minister sent a replacement. The man was upset, and never forgot the incident. Thirty years later Carolyn had a garage sale. My mother was there helping. A neighbor came over and they introduced themselves. He said, “Are you related to a minister?” “Yes, my husband is one.” “Well, I could tell you a thing or two.” Mom said, “Go ahead, I’ve heard it all.” “Thirty years ago he was supposed to marry…” and he told his story. Mom asked, “How long ago was that?” “Thirty years” he said. “Well, it couldn’t have been my husband. We only moved here 25 years ago.” For thirty years this man had been bitter at the wrong man!
What to do:
✞ It is wise to remember, no matter how long you nurse a grudge, it won’t get better.
