Daily Devotion: The Self-Induced Challenge of “Not Heeding”

Bible Reading: Genesis 12

Key Verse: Verse 4 – “So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.”

When we fail to heed God’s Word, we will automatically produce some unwanted challenges in our lives.  Take Abram, for example.  He was told to get out of his country and “from his kindred.”  So what did he do?  He took his nephew, Lot, with him.  So let the challenges begin.  There was strife between Abram’s and Lot’s herdsmen.  There was the challenge of having to free Lot from a prisoner-of-war camp.  Then was the challenge of Lot living in Sodom.  It really doesn’t pay to not heed God’s Word!!

Some years ago, I had a couple who wanted me to perform their wedding ceremony.  I began to ask them questions as I do every couple.  “Tell me about your salvation.”  She did but he didn’t.  He wasn’t saved.  That was problem number one.  Number two, “When God blesses you with a child, will he or she be raised in church?”  Her response, “Absolutely!”  His response, “Only if that is what he wants.”  Problem number three, “What about the child’s education?”  She said, “It would be a Christian education.”  He said, “I don’t think so.”  Needless to say, I did not marry the couple; but they did get married and were married for two to three years.   Them having all kinds of challenges in the family, they divorced.  You could see it coming.  “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers” (II Corinthians 6:14a).

When we fail to heed God’s Word, we open the door for all kinds of unwanted challenges to slip through the door.  Please take my unsolicited advice and heed God’s Word.  You’ll face every challenge in life without inviting them in!
