Daily Devotion: Challenge of Temptation

Bible Reading:  I Corinthians 10:1-18

Key Verse: Verse 13 – There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Key Words: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man

Some believers have a difficult time distinguishing between Satan tempting and God testing.

We are told in James 1:13b, “…for God cannot be tempted with evil….”  Satan tempts us with sin and to do evil.  God tests us to see if we will do good. Satan beckons us to disobey God.  God calls us to go and do good.

·   For example, Adam and Eve were told by Satan to eat (bad): no doubt a  temptation from Satan.

·       David committed adultery: no doubt a temptation from Satan.

·       But Jonah was called to preach (no evil there): a test from God!!

The following was taken from Our Daily Bread.

"A small boy was being cared for by a nursemaid.  When he saw a beautiful vase in a china cabinet, he wanted it.  When he was refused, he began crying, screaming and kicking.  His mother, hearing the fuss, came into the room to find out what the problem was.  Picking up her child, she said to him, ‘What do you want, darling?’  He pointed to the vase, so she gave it to him.  But that didn’t satisfy him, and soon he began crying again.  ‘Now what does my little darling want?’ the mother asked.  ‘I want – I want,’ said the boy between sobs, and he blurted out, ‘I want anything I’m not supposed to have!’”

What to do:
✞ Remember, “Temptation is the devil whistling at the keyhole; sinning is opening the door and letting him in.” ~~ Billy Sunday
