Daily Devotion: Where Common Sense Begins

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois in 1918
Bible Reading: Proverbs 1:1-9

Key Verse: Verse 7 – "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."

Key Words: The fear of the Lord

Everything has a beginning. The heavens and the earth have a beginning (Genesis 1:1). There is the beginning of a new year (Deuteronomy 11:12) and so it goes. But there is also the beginning of knowledge. The word knowledge means to become aware of …becoming aware that everything begins with the fear of the Lord. Where you find no fear of God, you find ignorance in abundance.

Burghardt DuBois, the great black educator, sociologist, and historian, upon completion of studies at Fisk, Harvard and the University of Berlin, was convinced that change in the condition of the American black could be effected by careful scientific investigations into the truth about the black in America. So he proceeded. His research was flawless and his graphs and charts impeccable. After waiting several years and hearing not the slightest stir of reform, Dr. DuBois had to accept the truth about Truth: its being available does not mean it will be appropriated.

And so it is with knowledge! It’s available; but seldom appropriated. That begins when we fear the Lord.

What to do:
✞ If we talk about knowledge but do not fear the Lord, then that’s all we do is talk, not live with knowledge.
