Daily Devotion: Emotional Abuse

Bible Reading: Proverbs 18:15-24

Key Verse: Verse 24– “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”

Key Words: there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother

Emotional abuse doesn’t leave physical scars.  There are no stitches required, no broken bones, and no spilled blood; but with that being said, emotional abuse does leave inner scars and a broken spirit.

There is no universal definition of emotional abuse.  My definition would be destroying one emotionally for the purpose of controlling them.  Emotional abuse is

Ø      being degraded, name-calling, ___________ such as being insulted constantly.

Ø   isolation: when others are not allowed to associate with you; peers threatening others who do associate with you.

Ø      being constantly humiliated in public.

Emotional abuse will usually reveal itself in the following ways.

Ø      Withdrawal

Ø      Anxiety

Ø      Sleep disturbance

Ø      Stealing

Ø      Frequent crying

Ø      Under-achievement

As parents, you should not over-react.  Children have bad days and tend to blame others

The real answer for emotional abuse is in marrying in God’s will.  Take time to genuinely get to know the person you are dating or courting.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions of others about your potential spouse.  If this upsets them, get out of the relationship quickly.  Choose friends who are true friends, not people wanting to use you.  And remember that God is a Friend that sticks closer than a brother.

What to do:
Don’t attempt to get even.  Let God be your Protector.
Pray without ceasing.
Talk to a spiritual friend or church counselor.
