Daily Devotion: True Christmas Stories

Bible Reading:  John 11:18-27

Key Verse: Verse 25 – “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:”

Key Words: yet shall he live

The following stories are true and should convict each of us to think more about the Christ of Christmas.

Pastor Clifford S. Stewart of Louisville, Kentucky, sent his parents a microwave oven one Christmas. Here’s how he recalls the experience: “They were excited that now they, too, could be a part of the instant generation. When Dad unpacked the microwave and plugged it in, literally within seconds, the microwave transformed two smiles into frown! Even after reading the directions, they couldn’t make it work. Two days later, my mother was with a friend and confessed her inability to get that microwave oven even to boil water. ‘To get this thing to work’ she exclaimed, ‘I really don’t need better directions; I just needed my son to come along with the gift!’  When God gave the gift of salvation, he didn’t send a booklet of complicated instructions for us to figure out; He sent His Son.”

Then there is the story that was sent to me and genuinely spoke to my heart.

A woman was out Christmas shopping with her two children.  After many hours of looking at row after row of toys and everything else imaginable, and after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw on those many shelves, she finally made it to the elevator with her two kids.

She was feeling what so many of us feel during the holiday season: overwhelming pressure to go to every party, every housewarming, taste all the holiday food and treats, getting that perfect gift for every single person on our shopping list, making sure we don't forget anyone on our card list and the pressure of making sure we respond to everyone who sent us a card.

Finally, the elevator doors opened and there was already a crowd in it. She pushed her way into the elevator and dragged her two kids in with her and all the bags of stuff. When the doors closed, she couldn't take it anymore and said, "Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be found, strung up and shot."

From the back of the elevator, everyone heard a quiet calm voice respond, "Don't worry, we already crucified Him." For the rest of the trip down the elevator, it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.  But need I remind you that “Up from the grave He arose!”

Remember this Christmas season and all the seasons in between.  Life is not about you and it’s not about me; life is all about Jesus Christ.

What to do:
✞ Always remember, Jesus came from heaven so we could go to heaven.
