At Fisk, John Wesley Work, Jr. (1871- 1925), and alumnus and faculty
member, was a leader in the movement to preserve, study, and perform Negro
spirituals. He trained and performed
with the professional and student groups of the Jubilee Singers, and collected,
harmonized, and published a number of collections of slave songs and spirituals. In 1907, Work wrote the lyrics to “Go Tell It

Refrain:
Go, tell it on the
mountain,
Over the hills and
everywhere
Go, tell it on the
mountain,
That Jesus Christ is
born.
While shepherds kept
their watch
Over silent flocks by
night
Behold throughout the
heavens
There shone a holy
light.
