The truth can often be painful. Maybe that’s the reason many have a hard time accepting it. Maybe that’s the reason that 67% of all adults in America believe that there is no absolute truth (current ministry magazine).
In his best-selling book Apocalypse Next, William Goetz illustrates how some people respond to truth. He tells of a man who smoked cigarettes. Through the reading of numerous articles he became alarmed over the strong relationship between smoking and lung cancer. He finally confided in a friend: “I’ve been reading so many articles about smoking and lung cancer that I’ve decided to quit reading.”
King Charles told Oliver Cromwell on one occasion to pose for a portrait. He didn’t want to, didn’t believe in that kind of vain stuff, but he did, because the king said to. He sat down before a rather diplomatic artist who began to put his thoughts together as the man was posing. And the artist noticed that Cromwell had a rather sizable wartlike growth on the side of his nose, near his cheek. He carefully suggested that Cromwell turn his face the other side to the canvas so that there might be a little better pose. Cromwell responded, “Mr. Lely, I desire you would use all your skill to paint my picture truly like me, and not flatter me at all; but remark all these roughnesses, pimples, warts, and everything you see; otherwise I will never pay a farthing for it.”
