Daily Devotion: The Gift of Rulership

Bible Reading:  Nehemiah 4:1-6 and Romans 12:8

Key Verse: Verse 8 – “Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with             simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.”

Key Words: he that ruleth, with diligence

The word ruleth found in Romans 12:8 means to oversee, give attention to, to preside over.

Just as there are those who have the God-given ability to teach, motivate, or give, there are those who have the God-given gift to preside over, superintend over others.  The ruler wants to see that everything runs smoothly and is organized.

The ruler has disdain for a church service which is disorganized.  As a matter of fact, the ruler has disdain for anything that is not well put together.  But organization by itself will fall short unless we are organized for the purpose of glorifying God and reaching people for Christ.

In his book Harvest of Humanity, John Seamands told this story: "A German soldier was wounded. He was ordered to go to the military hospital for treatment. When he arrived at the large and imposing building, he saw two doors, one marked, ‘For the slightly wounded,' and the other, ‘For the seriously wounded.'

"He entered through the first door and found himself going down a long hall. At the end of it were two more doors, one marked, ‘For officers,' and the other, ‘For non-officers.'  He entered through the latter and found himself going down another long hall.  At the end of it were two more doors, one marked, ‘For party members' and the other, ‘For non-party members.'  He took the second door, and when he opened it he found himself out on the street.

"When the soldier returned home, his mother asked him, ‘How did you get along at the hospital?'  ‘Well, Mother,' he replied, ‘to tell the truth, the people there didn't do anything for me, but you ought to see the tremendous organization they have!'"

A good ruler understands that without organization you fail, but organization is not the end.  It is a means to an end and that is why we organize: to help people and to reach them for Christ.

The ruler is needed.  Without them the church would be an unorganized mess.

What to do:
✞ If everything is running smoothly, then somewhere in your midst is one with the gift of rulership.
