There has been a lot in the news recently about immigration. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that borders and boundaries are a Biblical fact. Even in our text, Israel needed permission from the Edomites to pass into “their” land.
Borders are spoken of frequently in God’s Word. For example, I Kings 4:21, “And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.”
Nehemiah had to have a letter from the king granting him permission to cross over borders. Nehemiah 2:7, “Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah.”
Borders provide security for medical purposes, and for financial purposes, and for your own security. Ask yourself how insecure our nation would be without borders and rules for crossing those borders.
The findings of an interesting study done on school children by “Focus on the Family” reveals that a group of educators decided to remove the chain-link fences from around the school playgrounds. They believed the fences promoted feelings of confinement and restraint. The curious thing they noticed, however, that as soon as the fences were removed, the children huddled in the center of the playground to play. Conclusion: Children need boundaries. So does our nation and these boundaries need to be guarded and secured. If not, anarchy will reign.
