Daily Devotion: A Biblical View of Stem Cell Research

Bible Reading: Proverbs 14:24-35

Key Verse: Verse 34 - "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people."

Key Words: Righteousness exalteth a nation

There are three primary types of stem cell research. There is research known as cyro-cell cord, and there is skin cell research; but the problem with stem cell research is in neither of the above. The problem is in embryonic research.

The process for this embryonic stem cell research begins when the male sperm and the female egg are joined together. The process by which this is done is sinful within itself. Within twenty-four hours of the sperm and egg being joined together, a cell is formed. Within seventy-two hours the cell grows to what is known as totipotent cells. Within four days they adhere to one another in what is known as blastocyst. It is at this point that these cells can be used for two purposes.
  1. Reproduction—placed in the womb of a woman.
  2. Research—where the cells must die.
The reason for this embryonic stem cell research is that scientists tell us that embryonic stem cells have the potential to cure certain diseases.

There are several problems with embryonic stem cell research, but the primary problem is this: we believe that life begins at conception (Psalm 139:13-16 and Jeremiah 1:4-5). This means that embryonic stem cell research is “abortion.” This totally opposes the Word of God.

It is not, and will never be, right to take the life of a baby so that someone may possibly be cured from their illness. Think about it.

What to do:
✞ Pray and study and seek God’s wisdom in this area (James 1:5).
