Daily Devotion: Unappreciated

Bible Reading: I Corinthians 10:24-31

Key Verse: Verse 31 - “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

Key Words: do all to the glory of God

All of us on occasion feel unappreciated whether you are a housewife, breadwinner, church lay person, staff member of a church or even the pastor. There are those times when pity sets in and we begin to say to ourselves, “No one really appreciates all I do.” As a result, we may find ourselves with hurt feelings.

I have found the real key to overcoming these feelings of being unappreciated is genuinely focusing on who we really do things for.

A pastor friend in Tennessee walked out on his front porch one Saturday morning to find his newspaper right at his front door, and there standing with the newspaper in his mouth was an old stray dog. The pastor was so pleased with the dog that he went to get some food off the dinner table and gave it to the dog for his good labor. Amazingly, the next morning the pastor walked out on his front porch and found eight, yes eight, Sunday morning newspapers lying on his front porch with the old stray dog standing there with them. Now the pastor had to deliver all the neighbor’s newspapers back to their rightful owners. You see, the dog wasn’t doing what he did because he loved the preacher; he did what he did because of the attention and food it provided for him.

If we are not careful, we find ourselves doing the same as the dog…doing what we do because of the attention we get; and when we fail to get the attention we think we rightfully deserve, then come those feelings of being unappreciated.

So let me encourage you today to do what you do for Jesus; He always appreciates it!
