Bible Reading: Genesis 24:1-9
Key Verse: Verse 3 “And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:”

The Canaanites are a descendant of Ham (Genesis 10:6). The name Canaan means a traveling merchant. The land of Canaan covers the vast territory of Palestine and West Jordan.
The Canaanites were known for their worship which included the fertility gods. It introduced lewd worship, immorality and prostitution.
No wonder Abraham said to his servant, “...thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites... .”
There are some basic rules one needs to follow when it comes to marriage. First of all, you marry them for who they are, not what you think you can make them. Secondly, you marry them because you are in agreement, not because you think you can convince them to agree.
I read the following story that illustrates the point.
“The nervous young bride-to-be was counseled by her pastor: ‘When you enter the church tomorrow, you will only be walking down the aisle you’ve walked many times before. Concentrate on that. And when you get halfway down the aisle, concentrate on the altar, where you and your family have worshipped for so many years. Concentrate on that. And as you reach the end of the aisle, your groom will be waiting for you. Concentrate on him.’ It worked to perfection, and on her wedding day, the beautiful but nervous bride walked smoothly down the aisle in her processional. But people in the audience were a bit taken aback to hear her repeating to herself, all the way down the aisle, ‘Aisle, altar, him. Aisle, altar, him.’”
Don’t marry someone you have to alter, marry someone who spends a great deal of time at the altar.
